Main missions
The Welding Engineer plays a key role in validating welding procedures (WPS/PQR), qualifying welders, and monitoring manufacturing and assembly operations on site. He/She works closely with construction teams, suppliers, quality control departments, and safety authorities to ensure the quality and full traceability of all welding activities.
He/She is also involved in analyzing non-conformities, participating in inspections and destructive or non-destructive testing (NDT), and compiling welding dossiers for fabrication or installation completion.
Job activities
- Validation of Welding Procedures: Participate in the development, review, and qualification of welding procedures (WPS/PQR) in compliance with applicable nuclear codes (RCC-M, EN ISO 15614, ASME IX, etc.).
- Welder Qualification Control: Verify welder and operator qualifications, ensure correct implementation conditions (materials, positions, environment, etc.) are respected.
- On-Site Welding Supervision: Oversee welding operations in the field, verify compliance with procedures, control welding parameters, joint preparation, and adherence to the welding schedule.
- Quality Control and Testing: Participate in visual inspections and non-destructive testing (radiography, ultrasonic testing, dye penetrant, magnetic particle inspection), and validate results in coordination with QC teams.
- Non-Conformity Management: Identify welding defects or deviations, issue non-conformity reports (NCR), and propose corrective actions or repair plans in line with regulatory standards.
- Technical Documentation: Prepare welding dossiers: weld tracking sheets, material certificates, inspection plans, test reports, weld maps, and ensure full traceability and documentation completeness.
- Technical Interface: Collaborate with design engineers, construction teams, quality inspectors, and notified bodies (third parties, ASN) to ensure welding compliance with project specifications.
- Nuclear Safety Compliance: Apply and enforce safety, hygiene, and quality regulations required on BNI (Basic Nuclear Installation) sites, particularly when working on equipment covered by ESPN.
Required skills
A Welding Engineer during the construction phase of a nuclear project should possess the following skills:
- In-depth knowledge of welding processes (TIG, MIG/MAG, SMAW, orbital welding…).
- Mastery of nuclear welding codes and standards: RCC-M, RCC-MRx, ESPN, EN ISO 9606, EN ISO 15614, ASME IX…
- Proficiency in interpreting assembly drawings, isometrics, and welding plans (WPS).
- Experience supervising welding operations on industrial or nuclear construction sites.
- Strong skills in destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) and acceptance criteria.
- Rigorous documentation and a strong quality and safety culture.
- Ability to analyze deviations, propose corrective solutions, and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
- Knowledge of specific requirements for BNI environments (traceability, inspections, controls…).
- Technical English proficiency for supplier and regulatory communication.
