Main missions

The role of the Chief Drilling Mechanic is to supervise and coordinate all mechanical operations related to drilling. He is responsible for ensuring that the drilling equipment operates optimally, maintaining high standards of performance, safety and reliability.

The Chief Drilling Engineer plays a vital role in the management of drilling equipment, ensuring that it is well maintained, repaired and operational. His main responsibility is to ensure that the equipment operates reliably and safely, thereby contributing to the success of drilling and oil field operations.

Job activities

A Head Drilling Mechanic will be responsible for the following activities:

  • Drilling Equipment Management: The Chief Drilling Mechanic is responsible for the management of all drilling equipment, including drilling rigs, winches, pumps, drill masts, motors, control systems and other related equipment. He ensures that all equipment is in good working order and ready for use.

  • Planning and coordination: The chief drilling mechanic plans and coordinates the maintenance, repair and upkeep activities of the drilling equipment. He establishes preventive maintenance programs, organizes repair interventions and coordinates with the other teams on the drilling site.

  • Supervision of the mechanical team: The chief drilling mechanic supervises and supervises the mechanical team on the drilling site. He assigns tasks, provides training and development to team members, and ensures that work is carried out in accordance with safety standards and operational requirements.

  • Diagnosis and resolution of problems: In the event of a failure or mechanical problem, the chief drilling mechanic is responsible for quickly diagnosing the problems and implementing the appropriate solutions. He must be able to effectively solve technical problems to minimize downtime and ensure the continuity of drilling operations.

  • Management of spare parts and supplies: The chief drilling engineer manages the inventory of spare parts and supplies necessary for the maintenance and repair of drilling equipment. He ensures the availability of the necessary parts to avoid delays in maintenance work.

  • Performance Tracking: The Chief Drilling Mechanic tracks the performance of drilling equipment by collecting and analyzing data on downtime, breakdowns, fuel consumption, etc. It uses this information to identify trends, suggest improvements and optimize operational efficiency.

  • Compliance with safety and regulatory standards: The chief drilling engineer ensures that all maintenance and repair activities of drilling equipment are carried out in compliance with safety standards and regulations in force. He puts in place appropriate security procedures and ensures that the team respects them.

Required skills

A Head Drilling Mechanic must have the following skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of drilling equipment: Proficiency in the various components of drilling equipment, including motors, pumps, winches, control systems, drill masts, drilling tools, etc.

  • Maintenance and repair skills: Ability to perform preventive maintenance tasks, diagnose faults and carry out repairs on drilling equipment, respecting safety standards.

  • Knowledge of safety procedures: Familiarity with safety procedures specific to the petroleum industry, including equipment handling, risk management, accident prevention and environmental protection.

  • Team Management Skills: Ability to supervise and mentor a team of technicians and mechanics, providing clear direction, assigning tasks and ensuring effective communication.

  • Problem Solving Skills: Ability to quickly diagnose mechanical problems, find appropriate solutions and make informed decisions to minimize downtime.

  • Planning and coordination Skills: Ability to plan and coordinate maintenance and repair activities of drilling equipment, taking into account operational constraints and priorities.

  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with team members, supervisors and other stakeholders, using clear and precise language.

  • Inventory Management Skills: Ability to manage inventory of spare parts and supplies needed to maintain drilling equipment, ensuring they are available when needed.

  • Knowledge of Regulations: Familiarity with safety, environmental and health regulations and standards that apply to oil drilling operations.

  • Performance Monitoring Skills: Ability to collect, analyze and interpret drilling equipment performance data, to identify trends, opportunities for improvement and optimize operational efficiency.
