[HSE] Energy Consultants: How to prevent Psychosocial Risks (PSR) during international assignments?

Interview with Mohand Toudert, HSE Supervisor at Altea Energy

Working internationally in the energy sector is a rewarding professional opportunity — but also a true human challenge.

Being away from family, adjusting to an unfamiliar environment, dealing with performance pressure, and facing isolation on site: all these factors can expose consultants to psychosocial risks (PSR) if they are not properly supported.

Mohand Toudert, HSE Supervisor at Altea Energy, shares his field experience and advice on how to prevent such situations.

Why can international assignments lead to psychosocial risks (PSR)?

“Going on an international assignment is exciting, but it can also be unsettling. Moving to a new country, adapting to a different culture, sometimes a new language and unfamiliar food… all of this can lead to mental and emotional fatigue,” explains Mohand Toudert.

Added to this are:

  • The distance from family and loved ones, which can be difficult to cope with over time,
  • The pressure to perform from day one,
  • Harsh on-site conditions (isolation, extreme climate, security concerns).

Taken together, these factors can lead to significant stress if they are not acknowledged and properly addressed.

What are the warning signs to watch out for?

The signs of psychosocial risks are sometimes subtle, but revealing.

“It might be someone who becomes more irritable than usual, or on the contrary, very quiet. A consultant once told me he felt very alone after work, with no energy left to talk or interact. That’s a signal that shouldn’t be ignored,” notes Mohand Toudert.

Common warning signs include:

  • Persistent fatigue, sleep disturbances
  • Loss of motivation, unusual mistakes
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Social withdrawal after work

What actions does Altea Energy implement?

At Altea Energy, preventing psychosocial risks is an integral part of the HSE approach:

  • Pre-departure preparation: practical, cultural, and safety information is shared.
  • Ongoing support during the assignment: regular calls, informal check-ins, and feedback from the field.
  • Confidential listening and alert channels: so that everyone can report a difficulty without fear.
  • Referral to support: psychological or medical assistance can be offered if needed.

“Managers and support teams are the consultant’s first safety net during an assignment. Everyone is aware of the conditions and challenges that may arise,” emphasizes Mohand Toudert.

These close contacts are on the front line to detect changes in behavior or signs of low morale. Their role is to listen without judgment, create a climate of trust, and encourage open dialogue.

“The message is clear: speaking up will never put your assignment at risk,” Mohand adds.

Preventive tips before leaving for an assignment

According to Mohand, a few simple habits can really make a difference:

  • Prepare for the local environment (culture, logistics, safety).
  • Stay in touch with loved ones, even briefly.
  • Maintain a well-being routine: exercise, relaxation, sleep, and a balanced diet.
  • Speak up at the first signs of discomfort.

“My main advice: don’t keep it to yourself. Speaking up helps prevent physical and psychological stress from settling in and becoming a real problem,” concludes Mohand Toudert.
