Subsea Pipeline Installation Engineer Shallow-Water Subsea Scheme

The Subsea Pipeline Installation Engineer is responsible for engineering, planning, and executing the safe and efficient installation of subsea pipelines in shallow-water offshore environments. The role involves installation method development, marine spread engineering, analysis, documentation, offshore support, and coordination across multiple engineering disciplines to ensure successful installation operations.

Key Responsibilities

Installation Engineering & Method Development

  • Develop installation methodologies for S-lay/barge lay, shore approach, tie-in spools, and jumpers.
  • Perform engineering calculations including catenary analysis, tension, minimum bend radius (MBR) control, stress/strain, and on-bottom stability.
  • Review metocean data, operational limits, and weather windows for installation activities.
  • Prepare trenching, jetting, and burial engineering methods.

Offshore Execution Support

  • Support offshore mobilization, deck layout, welding spread preparation, and equipment readiness.
  • Monitor real-time installation parameters such as tension, layback, and vessel speed.
  • Coordinate with vessel crew, ROV teams, and survey teams during installation operations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve offshore engineering issues as they arise.

Installation Procedures & Documentation

  • Prepare detailed installation procedures, work packs, and method statements.
  • Develop risk assessments, lifting plans, laydown procedures, and touchdown monitoring plans.
  • Review and validate contractor procedures to ensure compliance with project requirements.

Interface & Coordination

  • Interface with pipeline design teams regarding MBR, loading conditions, coating, and free-span limits.
  • Coordinate with subsea structures teams for tie-in, lifting, and handling requirements.
  • Interface with umbilical/FOC and subsea controls teams for routing and combined lay operations.
  • Liaise with marine and survey teams for UXO clearance, route verification, and as-built surveys.

Marine Spread Selection & Planning

  • Support selection of lay barges, anchor spreads, and marine support vessels.
  • Review stinger/roller configuration, tensioner capabilities, and installation aids.
  • Develop shallow-water anchor patterns and vessel maneuvering strategies.

Trenching, Protection & Post-Lay Activities

  • Review trenching, jetting, and ploughing techniques for pipeline burial.
  • Plan and evaluate pipeline protection systems including mattresses and rock dumping.
  • Support post-lay survey interpretation and identify free-span remediation solutions.

HSE & Risk Management

  • Participate in HAZID, HAZOP, and constructability reviews.
  • Develop SIMOPS plans for multi-vessel and nearshore marine operations.
  • Ensure all installation activities comply with HSE, marine assurance, and regulatory requirements.

Technical Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of pipeline installation engineering including catenary behavior, MBR control, stability, and tension control.
  • Understanding of shallow-water constraints and surf-zone engineering challenges.
  • Proficiency with OrcaFlex, PipeLay, Offpipe, MathCAD, and route planning tools.
  • Knowledge of pipeline materials, coatings, buckle arrestors, and field joints.
  • Familiarity with trenching, protection systems, and subsea tie-in equipment.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Marine, Offshore, or related Engineering discipline.
  • 8-10 years of experience in subsea pipeline installation engineering.
  • Experience in shallow-water S-lay or barge lay operations.
  • Offshore installation support experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of DNV-ST-F101, DNV-RP-F109, API RP 1111, and related standards.
