Senior Corrosion Engineer

The Senior Corrosion Engineer is responsible for leading corrosion engineering efforts on EPC projects, ensuring the design, implementation, and maintenance of corrosion protection systems align with industry standards, client requirements, and project objectives. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of corrosion mechanisms, mitigation strategies, and materials selection for onshore and offshore facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead corrosion engineering efforts during the design, construction, and operational phases of EPC projects.
  • Develop and implement corrosion management strategies, including material selection, protective coatings, cathodic protection (CP) systems, and chemical treatment plans.
  • Perform corrosion risk assessments and Failure Mode Effect Analyses (FMEA) to evaluate potential failure points and mitigation measures.
  • Review and approve specifications, datasheets, and drawings related to corrosion protection systems and materials.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards such as NACE, ISO, API, and ASME, as well as client specifications.
  • Conduct materials and corrosion compatibility studies for piping, equipment, and structural components in various service environments.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines (process, mechanical, civil, and electrical) to ensure seamless integration of corrosion protection systems.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, including corrosion rate calculations, life-cycle cost analyses, and coating selection justifications.
  • Perform vendor evaluations and technical bid analysis for materials and corrosion protection systems.
  • Support construction and commissioning teams by providing guidance on the installation and testing of corrosion protection systems.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of installed systems and recommend improvements or corrective actions.
  • Stay updated on advancements in corrosion technologies and standards to incorporate best practices into projects.

Responsibilities in Detail

  • Design and specify cathodic protection systems, including impressed current and sacrificial anode systems.
  • Develop protective coatings and linings specifications and oversee their application and quality control.
  • Evaluate the suitability of metals, alloys, and non-metallic materials for different process environments.
  • Assess environmental factors such as temperature, pressure, and chemical exposure that contribute to corrosion.
  • Provide input for the preparation of project cost estimates and schedules related to corrosion engineering.
  • Conduct site visits to assess field conditions, collect data, and provide recommendations for corrosion mitigation.
  • Support root cause analysis (RCA) investigations for corrosion-related failures.

Technical and Industry Experience

  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in corrosion engineering, preferably in oil & gas, petrochemical, or related EPC projects.
  • Proficiency in corrosion modeling tools and software, such as Corrosion Analyzer, COMSOL, or similar applications.
  • Deep understanding of material degradation mechanisms, including general corrosion, pitting, stress corrosion cracking, and hydrogen embrittlement.
  • Familiarity with international standards like NACE SP0169, API 571, ISO 12944, and ASME B31.3.
  • Experience with cathodic protection system design and implementation.
  • Knowledge of advanced inspection techniques, such as UT, RT, and CUI detection, is highly desirable.
  • Background in offshore and onshore corrosion control systems is a significant advantage.

What You Bring

  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to solve complex corrosion-related challenges.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities to manage interdisciplinary project teams.
  • Proactive mindset to identify potential issues and propose effective solutions.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Corrosion Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field.
  • NACE-certified Corrosion Specialist or CP certification (CP1/CP2/CP3/CP4) is highly preferred.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license or equivalent certification is an asset.
