How to write an effective CV for a mission in the Energy Sector ?

By Manel Ben Daoud, Recruiter at Altea Energy

In a demanding and highly technical sector like energy, first impressions are often decisive. And that first impression usually comes from your CV.

Clarity, accuracy, and relevance are key factors that can make all the difference.

Manel Ben Daoud, a recruiter at Altea Energy since 2021, shares her practical advice to help you build a strong and impactful CV that reassures recruiters and convinces clients looking for top-tier energy consultants.

Make a great impression from the first glance

To grab a recruiter’s attention quickly, your CV must be visually clear, well-structured, and instantly understandable.

“When I open a CV, I immediately look at how clearly it’s presented, the job title, location, and recent work experience. These experiences should include the client’s name, the exact role, key responsibilities, and the mission duration,” Manel explains.

At the top of your CV, include a short professional summary. This allows recruiters to grasp, in just a few lines, the key elements of your profile: your areas of expertise, your experience level, and your technical skills relevant to the position.

Structure your CV like a well-executed project

A well-crafted CV should follow a clear and logical structure – just like a well-managed project. Manel recommends the following format:

  • Professional summary (in bullet point format)
  • Technical skills and certifications (grouped by theme where possible)
  • Detailed professional experience (with specific dates, clients, projects, responsibilities, and countries)
  • Education and certifications (with dates, institutions, and locations)
  • Languages spoken (and your proficiency level)
  • Up-to-date personal information (email, phone number, nationality, mobility)

This structure helps both recruiters and clients quickly find the specific information they need.

Don’t overlook the details that matter

Some elements—often forgotten or poorly presented—can be crucial for both recruiters and clients:

  • The end client for each mission listed, to demonstrate your knowledge of the relevant energy sector
  • Precise dates: always include both the month and year of the mission’s start and end
  • Language proficiency, especially for international roles
  • Current contact information, to make sure you’re reachable
  • Detailed and contextualized responsibilities, tailored to the energy sector

“Too often, I come across CVs with generic descriptions and responsibilities that could apply to any technical field. To really catch a recruiter’s eye, it’s important to demonstrate your understanding of the energy industry or project context,” Manel emphasizes.

Tailor your CV to each mission
(without starting from scratch)

Should you adjust your CV for every opportunity? Yes – but the good news is, you don’t need to rewrite the entire document each time.

“To tailor your CV to a specific role, it’s often enough to revise the summary at the top, or highlight key missions and technical keywords relevant to the project,” Manel advises.

You can also bring important certifications to the top if they’re especially relevant for the job.

How to handle short assignments or gaps in employment

In the energy sector, it’s common for consultants to have short-term contracts or periods of inactivity. That’s perfectly normal, but it’s important to present these periods in a clear and coherent way:

  • Group similar missions if they were for the same client or under the same umbrella company
  • Briefly explain the context: project ended, rotation schedule, client changes, etc.

“There’s no need to justify employment gaps directly in your CV, but it’s always best to be transparent if asked during an interview. This gives recruiters more clarity about your career timeline,” Manel notes.

One final tip:
Align your CV with your LinkedIn Profile

Once your CV is polished, don’t forget to update your LinkedIn profile. Energy recruiters rely heavily on this platform to search for, assess, and contact potential candidates.

“It’s essential that the information on your CV aligns with the experience listed on your public LinkedIn profile. This increases your credibility and reassures recruiters about the accuracy of your background,” concludes Manel.

In summary

In the energy industry, an effective CV is one that gets straight to the point while offering enough context to reassure recruiters and convince clients.

It should be:

  • Clear and well-organized
  • Precise in terms of dates, clients, and responsibilities
  • Tailored to each mission
  • Transparent about your professional journey

By following Manel’s advice, you’ll boost your chances of being noticed and contacted for your ideal assignment.
