Reporting To: Subsea Engineering Manager / Project Manager

Job Purpose

The Umbilical & Fiber Optic Cable Engineer is responsible for the engineering, design review, installation support, testing, and integrity management of subsea umbilicals and fiber optic cable systems for offshore oil & gas developments. The role ensures technical compliance, operational reliability, and safe execution of offshore installation activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate engineering activities related to subsea umbilicals and fiber optic cable systems.
  • Review and validate design documents, routing studies, technical specifications, and installation procedures.
  • Support FEED, detailed engineering, procurement, fabrication, testing, and offshore installation phases.
  • Interface with subsea, pipeline, telecom, instrumentation, and installation contractors.
  • Monitor manufacturing progress, FAT/SIT activities, and quality inspections.
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications, international standards, and client requirements.
  • Participate in offshore installation campaigns, cable laying, pull-in, termination, and commissioning activities.
  • Support troubleshooting of fiber optic communication systems and subsea control systems.
  • Review installation analyses including:
    • Cable routing
    • Mechanical protection
    • Bend radius verification
    • Dynamic analysis
    • Crossing studies
  • Coordinate risk assessments and HSE requirements for offshore activities.
  • Prepare technical reports, engineering queries, deviation requests, and lessons learned documentation.
  • Support integrity monitoring and maintenance strategies for installed systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 7-10 years of experience in offshore Oil & Gas projects.
  • Proven experience with subsea umbilical and fiber optic cable systems.
  • Offshore installation experience is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of subsea production systems and offshore construction methodologies.

Technical Knowledge

Strong understanding of:

  • Fiber optic transmission systems
  • Subsea control systems
  • Umbilical design and installation
  • Cable protection systems
  • Offshore installation vessels and equipment
  • International offshore standards (DNV, API, IEC)
  • Testing and commissioning procedures

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong coordination and engineering management skills
  • Excellent communication and reporting abilities
  • Problem-solving and analytical capabilities
  • Ability to work under offshore operational constraints
  • Team-oriented with multicultural project exposure
  • Fluent English mandatory
