Excavation Safety Engineer

Key Responsibilities

Excavation & Trenching Safety

• Review and approve excavation and trenching plans, method statements, and risk assessments.
• Ensure proper soil classification and selection of protective systems (sloping, benching, shoring, shielding).
• Verify safe access and egress (ladders, ramps) for excavations and trenches.
• Monitor excavation activities to ensure compliance with approved safety procedures.

Hazard Identification & Risk Control

• Identify hazards related to excavation activities (collapse, flooding, gas release, utilities).
• Ensure underground utilities are identified, isolated, or protected before excavation.
• Implement control measures for groundwater, rainwater, and dewatering operations.
• Stop unsafe work and recommend corrective actions when required.

HSE Compliance & Supervision

• Ensure compliance with local regulations, client standards, and international guidelines (OSHA, BS, ISO).
• Conduct daily site inspections and safety audits.
• Participate in Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Toolbox Talks, and Permit to Work (PTW) systems.

Training & Awareness

• Provide excavation safety training and toolbox talks to supervisors and workers.
• Raise awareness on safe excavation practices and emergency response procedures.
• Support competency assessments for excavation-related activities.

Incident Management & Reporting

• Investigate excavation-related incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
• Prepare safety reports, inspection records, and corrective action follow-ups.
• Coordinate with construction, engineering, and HSE teams to improve safety performance.
