  • Duration: Employee fixed term 6-12 months
  • Qualifications: Relevant first degree (Geoscience related)

Key skills

  • 10 years’ experience as Wellsite Geologist with North Africa/South Algeria/Illizi Basin experience preferred
  • High developed interpersonal skills
  • Experienced in GEO log drawing software
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office products
  • Fluent written and spoken English
  • French language skills preferred

Role and Responsibilities

  • HSE and Ethics
    • The Wellsite Geologist is the Company’s geological representative on the rig and needs to demonstrate HSE leadership in all interactions with contractors and other Company representatives at the rig.
    • Demonstrate high ethical standards in dealing with contractors and other stakeholders
    • Must have a good understanding of gas and pore pressure related geo-hazards and ability to immediately report any detected anomalies to the Drilling Supervisor at the rig site.
    • Promote safe behaviours among the Geological Operations contractors and ensure safety meetings and/or toolbox talks are implemented prior to all key operations.
    • Observe and report to Company’s Operations Geologist all geological operations related HSE matters from the rig and intervene as necessary in line with the Company’s HSE policy.
  • Geology
    • Detailed lithological analysis and description of cuttings and core samples
    • Hydrocarbon evaluation based on identification of oil shows and interpretation of ditch gas data
    • Identification of formation tops and correlation with offset wells
    • Knowledge of gas analysis techniques
    • Interpretation of the pore pressure of drilled formations
    • Production of the ‘Geologist’s Lithology log’ to a specified format
    • Selection of key points (core, casing, TD) in consultation with the Company Operations Geologist
  • Reporting and Planning
    • Produce the daily geological report, with all information pertinent to the 24hr period up to report time
    • Timely transmission of reports and logs to the Company Operations Geologist
    • Clear, concise, verbal reporting to the Operations Geologist or other designated personnel at specified times
    • Written weekly report and contractors QC summary sent to the Operations Geologist at specified time
    • Transmission of wireline log data, when required
    • Drafting Lithology and Composite logs using Geologix GEO software
    • Compilation of the end of well report in conjunction with the Company Operations Geologist
    • Compilation of well planning material (pore pressure plot, geohazard assessment, Geological Programme) as directed by the Operations Geologist
  • Key Accountabilities
    • Supervision and QC of Mudlogging personnel
    • Ensuring that geological sampling programme is performed as specified
    • Liaison with MWD/LWD personnel engaged in acquisition of logging-while-drilling data (if applicable)
    • Supervision of core handling and core sampling operations, and core description
    • Ensuring despatch of cuttings and core from wellsite in a timely manner
    • Co-ordination of the wireline logging programme (in the absence of wireline QA/QC specialist)
    • Supervision of the wireline logging contractor and quality control of wireline log data (in the absence of wireline QA/QC specialist
