Junior Drilling Supervisor (Night DSV)

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate all drilling and well-site activities during the night shift.
  • Ensure operations are conducted in accordance with the approved drilling program and well objectives.
  • Work under the direction of the Senior Drilling Supervisor and maintain continuity between day and night operations.
  • Monitor drilling parameters and operational performance throughout the shift.
  • Coordinate activities between the Rig Manager, Driller, Mud Engineer, Directional Driller, MWD/LWD personnel, Cementing and other well-service companies.
  • Ensure all drilling activities are conducted safely and efficiently.
  • Verify that approved procedures, work instructions, risk assessments, and Job Safety Analyses are followed.
  • Participate in pre-job meetings, toolbox talks, and shift handover meetings.
  • Maintain effective communication with the Driller and rig crew throughout critical operations.
  • Monitor progress against the drilling program and report any deviation or operational concern.
  • Immediately escalate significant operational, safety, well-control, or equipment issues to the Senior Drilling Supervisor.

Drilling Operations

Monitor and supervise drilling activities including, where applicable:

  • Rig-up and rig-down operations.
  • Spud and conductor operations.
  • Drilling and hole-cleaning activities.
  • Tripping operations.
  • BHA make-up and running.
  • Drill pipe and tubular handling.
  • Casing running operations.
  • Cementing operations.
  • Well-control activities.
  • Pressure testing.
  • Formation evaluation and logging operations.
  • Directional drilling operations.
  • Mud-system activities.
  • Wellhead and BOP-related operations.
  • Completion and well-intervention activities as assigned.

Well Control Responsibilities

  • Maintain a strong awareness of well-control requirements throughout drilling operations.
  • Monitor drilling parameters for indications of potential well-control events.
  • Ensure well-control procedures are followed.
  • Monitor pit volumes, flow rates, trip sheets, pump pressure, returns, and other relevant indicators.
  • Ensure appropriate actions are taken in accordance with the approved well-control procedures when abnormal conditions are identified.
  • Participate in well-control drills and exercises.
  • Ensure the rig crew maintains readiness for well-control situations.
  • Immediately report any suspected kick, loss, influx, abnormal pressure, or other well-control concern to the Senior Drilling Supervisor.
  • Support implementation of the well-control response plan as directed.

HSE Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate visible leadership in Health, Safety, and Environmental performance.
  • Ensure all night-shift activities comply with company and client HSE requirements.
  • Monitor compliance with Permit to Work (PTW), JSA, risk assessments, and safe work procedures.
  • Conduct or participate in toolbox talks and pre-job safety meetings.
  • Identify unsafe acts and conditions and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Exercise Stop Work Authority when an activity presents an unacceptable risk.
  • Monitor critical activities such as lifting, working at height, pressure testing, hot work, confined-space entry, and simultaneous operations.
  • Ensure appropriate PPE is used by all personnel.
  • Report incidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, and environmental events.
  • Support emergency response activities and participate in emergency drills.

Night Shift Supervision

The Night DSV is responsible for maintaining effective operational control during the night shift and ensuring a proper handover to the day team.

Responsibilities include

  • Conduct a detailed shift handover with the outgoing DSV.
  • Review current well status, drilling parameters, operational objectives, and planned activities.
  • Review outstanding operational and HSE issues.
  • Monitor critical equipment and service-company activities.
  • Coordinate night-shift personnel and service contractors.
  • Maintain clear communication with the Senior Drilling Supervisor and relevant support functions.
  • Prepare a comprehensive shift report for the incoming DSV.
  • Highlight any abnormal conditions, delays, operational risks, or deviations from the drilling program.
  • Ensure all relevant operational data and documentation are accurately recorded.
