Role Overview

The Drilling Fluids Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing drilling fluid systems throughout the offshore drilling campaign. Working closely with the Drilling Superintendent, Drilling Supervisors, and drilling fluids service company, the role ensures that drilling fluids are engineered to maximize drilling performance, maintain well integrity, and support safe and efficient well construction.

The position provides technical support from well planning through execution, ensuring drilling fluids meet operational objectives while complying with Company HSE standards, environmental regulations, and industry best practices.

Activities

Drilling Fluids Engineering

  • Design and optimize drilling fluid programs for offshore development wells.
  • Select appropriate drilling fluid systems based on geological and operational requirements.
  • Monitor drilling fluid performance and recommend adjustments to optimize drilling efficiency.
  • Ensure drilling fluids comply with well design parameters and operational objectives.
  • Provide technical support during drilling, casing, cementing, and completion operations.

Operational Support

  • Monitor daily drilling fluid properties and treatment programs.
  • Review daily mud reports and drilling parameters.
  • Troubleshoot drilling fluid-related issues including:
    • Wellbore instability
    • Hole cleaning
    • Torque and drag
    • Fluid losses
    • Differential sticking
    • Formation damage
  • Recommend corrective actions to minimize Non-Productive Time (NPT).

Contractor Management

  • Supervise drilling fluids service companies and laboratory personnel.
  • Review contractor recommendations and validate treatment programs.
  • Ensure chemicals, additives, and consumables are available to support operations.
  • Monitor contractor performance against Company expectations and contractual requirements.

HSE & Environmental Compliance

  • Ensure drilling fluid operations comply with Company HSE requirements and environmental regulations.
  • Promote safe handling, storage, and disposal of drilling fluids and associated chemicals.
  • Participate in Job Safety Analyses (JSA), toolbox talks, and risk assessments.
  • Support waste management and environmental reporting activities.

Planning & Reporting

  • Prepare drilling fluid programs and technical procedures.
  • Participate in well planning, pre-spud meetings, and operational reviews.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and end-of-well technical reports.
  • Capture lessons learned and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in drilling fluids engineering within the Oil & Gas industry.
  • Extensive offshore drilling experience.
  • Previous experience on development drilling campaigns is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Water-Based Mud (WBM)
    • Synthetic-Based Mud (SBM)
    • Oil-Based Mud (OBM)
    • Completion Fluids
    • Solids Control
    • Wellbore Stability
    • Hydraulics
    • Hole Cleaning
  • Experience in deepwater drilling operations is considered a strong advantage.
Certifications
  • IWCF Well Control certification is considered an advantage.
  • BOSIET with OPITO CA-EBS.
  • Valid Offshore Medical Certificate.
