The Geophysicist is responsible for providing geophysical knowledge input to the project. The role demands that close links are developed and maintained with other geosciences and engineering disciplines such as Geology, Petrophysics, Petroleum Engineering and Drilling.


Seismic Interpretation

1. Knowledge in: Identification of geological features and seismic attributes for structural and stratigraphic interpretation in 2D/3D environment. Well to seismic calibration.

2. Able to: Interpret horizons & faults on 2D and 3D seismic data. Perform seismic interpretation in time and depth domain integrating other data. Assess uncertainties of geophysical interpretation. Explain its geological significance. Construct attribute maps, apply geostatistical methods to correlate seismic with well and reservoir properties, incorporate geological constraints, use multiple attributes to discern reservoir properties

Depth Conversion

3. Knowledge in: Time to depth conversion methods, including advantages and disadvantages

4. Able to: Derive appropriate velocity function for converting time to depth using well tops, check shots, and stacking velocities. Build 3D velocity model integrating well and seismic velocities in the presence of dip

Seismic Attributes

5. Knowledge in: Classification and application of seismic attributes. Direct hydrocarbon indicators and their pitfalls with rock physics explanation. AVO, Inversion and multicomponent seismic quantitative interpretation for characterizing reservoirs

6. Able to: Use seismic attributes to display lateral changes in rock and fluid properties. Apply geostatistical methods (variogram, krigging, cokrigging, principal component, Fuzzy logic, neural network techniques) to establish relationship between seismic attributes and reservoir properties. Perform synthetic modelling to validate seismic attributes, AVO and inversion to derive the reservoir and fluid properties

Synthetic Modelling

7. Knowledge in: Forward and reverse modelling. Different types of modelling techniques (advantages and disadvantages)

8. Able to: Construct simple 1 D models (synthetic seismograms) and 2D zero offset models. Build different type geological models and synthetic seismograms using ray trace modelling and introducing different noise levels

Seismic Stratigraphy

9. Knowledge in: Concepts and applications of seismic sequence stratigraphy. Seismic interpretation of the sedimentary environments, depositional sequences and sequence tracts. Identification of unconformities and other important features 10. Able to: Interpret seismic sequences, faults, and seismic facies boundaries of elastic systems and relate them to chronostratigraphy and relative changes in sea level

Seismic Reservoir Characterization

11. Knowledge in: Techniques including geostatistics for seismically guided reservoir characterization, their advantages and limitations. Establishing relation between core, log and seismic measurements. Analysis of the uncertainties

12. Able to: Generate synthetic responses, well log data cross plots, geostatistical relations, AVO and inversion outputs to quantify reservoir properties. Establish link between synthetic and real seismic data to establish trends on rock properties in terms lithology, depth, and geological environment. Capable of selecting appropriate seismic attributes which can be used for structural and stratigraphic interpretation. Assess uncertainties of post stack seismic attributes

Borehole Seismic

13. Knowledge in: Borehole seismic (check shots, VSP, Cross well seismic, sonic reflection imaging microseismic etc.) modelling, acquisition, processing and quality control. VSP modelling, design, acquisition, and processing

14. Able to: Select appropriate VSP for specific objectives and supervise VSP data acquisition, processing and interpretation

Geodesy and Topography

15. Knowledge in: Geodesy and its application. References, projections and positioning in global sense. Interpreting the spheroid, the datum and projection for a project. Conversion from one system to another. Quality control of projections and conversions. Specifications for the terrestrial or marine positioning of activities

16. Able to: Capable of converting all the available geodetic information to a new project based projection system. Prepare supporting information to locate new drilling locations. Validate survey results and insert new well coordinates in data sets preserving full QC trail

Pore Pressure Prediction and Shallow Hazards Prediction

17. Knowledge in: Identification of pore pressure and shallow hazards using seismic data. Establishing relation between interval velocity and seismic amplitude anomaly for expected pore pressure and shallow hazards zones. Calibration of seismic velocity to recorded well pressure. Quantification and prediction of overpressure zones using seismic data for quantifying drilling risks

18. Able to: Perform modelling studies to identify amplitude anomalies on seismic data due to overpressure. Identify, map, and delineate seafloor, shallow subsurface geologic, and manmade features that may impact proposed gas operations. Perform seismic data to well calibration, and seismic interpretation (horizons and faults on 2D and 3D seismic data) in time and depth domain integrating other data


• Effective interaction with other areas. Able to contribute actively to integrated studies with other disciplines (e.g., Geology, Petrophysics, Reservoir Engineering and Drilling)

• Demonstrate a good level of computer skills. Experience with leading geophysical applications is essential, standard suite of industry software (from Geoframe, Petrel, etc.)

• Must have strong communication skills along with an ability to work in a team environment (multicultural project team), as well as an ability to work unsupervised with initiative to resolve potential problems. Effective interaction with other GGPE disciplines and Drilling


Fluent English. French is highly recommended

Good written communication skills

At least 5 years of relevant working experience as Geophysicist working in development

projects for the Oil & Gas industry

Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geophysics or equivalent
