Geologist

Job Role

  • Operations and Wellsite geologists supervise and monitor every geological stage during the well drilling process, providing support to execute the plan to meet well objectives.
  • They study, analyse, describe and identify the rocks while drilling.
  • They use specialised tests on rock-cutting data (calcimetry, fluorescence, etc.), core samples, drilling data (rate of penetration, gas chromatography, etc.), log data and other measures to do this.
  • By analysing and evaluating rocks in real time they make recommendations to the drilling engineers such as: picking geological tops, coring and casing point’s determination, depth control on target zones and wireline logging interval determination.
  • Ultimately, it’s their responsibility to decide when drilling should be suspended or stopped according to the drilling well programme.
  • It’s a high-pressure role, because Operations and Wellsite geologists are responsible for liaising with mudloggers and drilling engineers to ensure the drilling goes off without a hitch, as well as making sure that it follows the correct health and safety procedures.
  • Prior to drilling, they also launch the tender process for their different activities (mudlogging, wireline logging), prepare well proposals, implantation reports, stratigraphic prognosis, well data packs, anticipate geological drilling hazards, pore pressure predictions and attend to the pre-spud meeting. While drilling, they supervise the mudlogging unit management, logistics of logging and coring operations, evaluate oil and gas shows, compile and email daily geological reports, correlate with offset wells, update the composite and lithology logs by using drawing software (Gravitas or similar), conduct geosteering on horizontal and directional drilling, supervise and QC of wireline logging operations.
  • Eventually, they write the final geological well report and may participate in the well post-mortem analysis.

Knowledge And Experience

Degree and Technical Expertise

  • In Development Master in a Geosciences technical discipline, preferably MSc, with a strong foundation within petrophysics and formation evaluation. First career years. Basic knowledge of other disciplines E&P. Learning company culture and fundamentals of the oil industry. Understanding and demonstrated ability in the use and application of basic Petro tools and techniques in core discipline areas. Understand Geosciences value and limitations. Able to learn rapidly and integrate data.
  • Junior Understands and is able to apply standard principles, techniques, and tools in assigned specialty. Develops awareness of x- disciplines. Able to compile, organize, integrate and interpret data. Able to learn and apply new and emerging concepts very quickly.
  • Professional Confirmed professional that regularly and independently applies knowledge and skills during projects. Able to integrate findings of x-disciplines. Awareness of project management, HSE and EP global business.
  • SeniorRecognized as a highly qualified professional with extensive background and experience, having participated in numerous projects and diverse areas. Routinely integrates findings of neighboring disciplines. Knowledge of project management process. May lead small teams, starting knowledge of managing people. Provides technical leadership to others in the Geoscience domain
  • Principal Leadership skills to manage operations under the framework of a project. Recognized as a highly qualified senior Geoscientist with extensive background and experience. Ability to lead small to medium project teams.
    • Languages: fluent English, oral and writen, required.

  • The operations/wellsite geologist understands and promotes the company’s health, safety & environmental policy and objectives. She/he performs work in accordance with the company’s established rules, regulations and approved procedures. The person intervenes and stops unsafe acts and practices and is accountable for the well-being and safety of own self and others, including all contracted labor force - unskilled, semiskilled, and skilled.
  • They should be able to work in a multi-disciplinary environment with teams spread across several assets: geologists, geophysicists, and reservoir, facilities and operations engineers.
  • She/he plans, directs and actively participates in the ongoing training, appraisal and development of own self and subordinates. This includes assessing employees’ training and development needs, directing the preparation of structured development programs, monitoring progress and counseling trainees on alternative career paths and job profiles available in the company.
  • 4She/he is expert responsible in all operations technology and the geological activities that directly impact the short and long term business and field development plans.
  • She/he is responsible for sharing the knowledge and that it is applied in future projects.

Job/Position Dificulties

  • To do the job, you will need to demonstrate strong problem-solving skills. They must be able to think analytically in order to tackle complex problems.
  • Operations/wellsite geologist are also required to be in good physical shape since they may be required to spend days and sometimes weeks out in remote locations, collecting samples.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work alongside a team are good attributes to have for the job.
